Look, you don't have to agree 100% with everything I say. I'm just asking that you be open enough to look at what I am proposing.

My first pastorate was in Willcox, Arizona. In my first week there, I went to a denominational meeting in Phoenix. I bought Leslie Weatherhead's book, The Christian Agnostic. I read it very slowly, one chapter a week. Weatherhead was feeding my young theology. He was saying things that fed my soul. I in return was feeding my congregation weekly with sermons that came from reading this book. When I got to chapter fourteen, it was on reincarnation. I was sure that he was going to blast it to smithereens. Instead, he not only said he believed in it, but strongly endorsed it!!! I was SO angry that I threw his book across the room. It landed on the floor by the bookshelf, and sat there for six months before I could pick it up. I felt totally betrayed by someone I had chosen as my mentor. Forty years later I went back to his book, after making a mental apology to him and the book, and read again what he had to say. He quotes Wilfred Totter, "  If we watch ourselves honestly, we shall often find that we have begun to argue a new idea even before it has been completely stated. "   I had done that.

Waterhead said : "  Part of our preparation for heaven may be that we have to come back to earth in another human body and try again. Said C.S. Lewis,' I believe that if a million chances were likely to do good, they would be given."

O.K. so did you know that some of the biggest names in history believed in reincarnation? People like Walt Whitman, Longfellow, Swinburne, W.E. Henley, and Rudyard Kipling, and C.S. Lewis have been quoted in support of reincarnation. In addition the views of General George Patton, Ibsen, Schopenhauer, Hume, Goethe are well known. In the ancient world Cicero, Seneca, Pythagoras and Plato also believed in reincarnation. Weatherhead says, "A belief held by so many and by such distinguished thinkers is not to be brushed aside lightly."

YES !

I didn't mean to imply that the Bible was wrong, but my interpretation of it certainly was. Wait till you see what I saw once I took off my "Evangelical Blinders".

I had been reading these for years, and didn't see them.

Again Weatherhead says, "Unless we can break out of the prison of old fashioned expressions, creeds and formularies, we shall never be free to find the far more glorious truths which are inherent in the Christian religion."

I want everyone to see the truths I've found whether you accept them as your truths or not. As evangelicals we believe that every believer has the right to interpret scripture for himself or herself. My book may end up on the floor of your study for six weeks or more and you may not even consider what I had to say for another forty years. That's O.K. But, if you at least read it, then I have done what God has given me to do. I have put "it" out there for whoever is willing to see "it" or hear "it".
